Holy shit…This was a spectacular read.

I finally got around to finishing Oathbringer this weekend, and I bought it the day it came out at Barnes and Noble (2.5 Months ago. Yes it took me a long time. I did have to read Edgedancer first too) The journey was well worth the destination! (heh) I’m not quite sure that I can even type up a blog post so soon after I finished reading it – the emotions are just too strong right now. Warning: this post is going to be more just a hype post rather than a review.

The art is incredible!

Dalinar finally got his book and we received the pleasure of learning about the rest of his character. Dalinar was always an interesting character, but the pain he went through in the past really ties him all together. (Especially at the end when the story comes full circle with Odium) Kaladin might still be my favorite character, but god damn Dalinar is a masterpiece. When Dalinar screams “You cannot have my pain!” right to Odium’s face (Well Odium is on Braize…) I swear I got chills and felt inspired at how epic the scene played out to be. This is why I am addicted to epic fantasy now, I crave that heroic-inspiration feeling! (It’s a drug endorphin high  at this point…) As always the pace pickups in the last 15% of the novel. It was impossible to put down after the back to back to back hits that kept coming.

Enough about Dalinar though – Every other character grew on me during the Oathbringer journey as well. Szeth has got me yearning for the day that his own focus book comes out. (As long as sword-nimi joins him) I’m really looking forward to learning more about Jasnah too, or rather learning what she knows already. (Bring me some of that sweet worldbuilding) I would really like to see more of Renarin while we are at it too. I see some of myself in his character (still the majority with Kaladin though). Lift has also grown on me now. When she was first introduced, I felt as if I had met her before, maybe parts of her character remind me of others from Sanderon’s works – which kind of bothered me for a while. There is just something about her that I can’t place…Edgedancer was a fun read though! (It reminded me a lot of The Slow Regard of Silent Things – another book 2.5)

If you have not started The Stormlight Archive series yet, go do it now. I need people to talk to about the cosmere.

I am not sure how I am going to make it waiting for book 4…

  2. I am currently working my way through the Mistborn series myself (my first of his), I can’t wait to start another by Sanderson, he’s amazing! I will probably do this series next. 🙂

  3. I love Brandon Sanderson!! I, sadly haven’t got to the Oathbringer series yet… But, it’s on the list!! (It’s also been on the list for a while..) but, I’ve got a week on a beach coming up so I’m going to get so much reading done!! (if I can’t stop myself from imbibing on the ‘all inclusive’ too much) so, I feel so spoiled!!

  5. Chaz! AHHHHHHH! You beat me to doing an Oathbringer review. I feel you with the enthusiasm. The Stormlight Archive is some good stuff.

    Gotta say, Kaladin is easily my favorite as well, but Dalinar is such a compelling character. I’m absolutely stoked that he got his own book.

    Chalk another ridiculously good story up for Sanderson.

  6. Geez, this is a very enthusiastic, powerful review! I started tackling The Final Empire a couple of days ago, and I totally get what you are getting at! Brandon Sanderson enthralled me and turned me in an instant fangirl. I am now so excited (and I actually can’t) wait to read his other books!!

  11. The only thing i’ve read from Sanderson was the Reckoners Trilogy which is sci-fi, and all the books are super short. The more reviews i see about his fantasy stuff, the more i want to read them. Even bought Mistborn the other day… the size of the books are daunting though… I think i need to wait till i’m on holiday and actually have a chance to spends hours and hours reading, because i don’t like spreading a book across a month.

  14. Love the art – I don’t read much in the way of adult fantasy, though I almost read fantasy exclusively in YA. But I love a good series that leaves you aching for the next installment!

  17. Relating so much to the emotions you feel right after finishing a book. It could take anywhere between a week and a year for me to feel like I’ve come to terms with the events, let alone feel ready to right a review.

  18. That was my second-favorite book of last year. Question: How did you feel about Kaladin and the events of Kholinar? I understood the “plot point,” but I wasn’t a fan of the execution or the flashback attempting to explain the “plot point.”

  28. Brandon’s version of “What is the most important step a man can take?” was great, and makes the common answer (the first one) seem wrong. Where Words of Radiance was a book of triumph, Oathbringer felt like a book of accepting weaknesses and past failures. Great review — only three more years until book four! We can make it!

  30. I didn’t want to read the review because I haven’t read ANY Brandon Sanderson yet (and from what I can tell, it’s a must if you’ve got any fantasy genre cred)- but this looks so good. On my every expanding TBR!

  40. When this book came out, our book club dropped our supposed read immediately and started Oathbringer instead. The Stormlight Archive has always been a breathtaking world (what can you expect from a Sanderson epic fantasy, right?). But I was enthralled by Oathbringer. ENTHRALLED! =))
