Adrift in space with no food or water, Tony Stark sends a message to Pepper Potts as his oxygen supply starts to dwindle. Meanwhile, the remaining Avengers — Thor, Black Widow, Captain America and Bruce Banner — must figure out a way to bring back their vanquished allies for an epic showdown with Thanos — the evil demigod who decimated the planet and the universe.

We begin the finale at very rock bottom. If there was ever a time for a hero to muster up every last ounce of strength, it is now.

21 movies ago, Iron Man came out in 2008. That was about 11 years ago today. The scope and undertaking of such a massive entertainment project to span over that amount of time is unreal. A shared universe with this much money that has been poured in is something that has never been done before. The MCU will have a lasting legacy for many many years into the future.

The Infinity Saga

Everything over the past 11 years have been leading up to this point. The culmination of maxresdefaulta multitude of emotion is near climax, and will finally get its release in Endgame. If you have been invested in this sage over the past decade, then no doubt this will be a bittersweet ending. We will all be saying goodbye to a dear friend, but every journey must come to an end at some point.

11 years ago when I watched Iron Man, I had never paid attention to any comic book aaa95cfefc74e8ea0d112dc3441c8211character. I never read any comics, never hyped over superhero movies, and never even thought they were cool. The Dark Knight really started to get my attention… but over the years the MCU had completely stolen all of it. Thanks to the Infinity Saga, I am now a super nerd! (I guess I already was…)

It has been an emotional journey to say the least. Many things in my life have changed and took different courses over the last 11 years, but there was always the constant of going to the movie theater to see the latest MCU movie. The other constant was me immediately going onto the marvel wiki sites to look up everything that I just saw in the movie. A complex universe that has been created over many years through the use of expert world-building is just too much for me to pass down. Nerds love to become the subject matter experts of everything they like.

Infinity War

We last left off at the lowest point for the Avengers. Thanos achieved his goal of  gathering all of the infinity stones and wiping out half of humanity. They are spread out across the galaxy and utterly decimated. This sets the stage for the greatest comeback ever. Whatever it takes.

One of my favorite things about Infinity War is the fact that the villain wins at the end of the movie. After all of the superhero fatigue that we have been facing, it is nice to see the bad guys win once in a while. I am a big fan of the anti-hero and villains of most things though, so I am a little biased.  At the end of Infinity War Thanos became one of my favorite characters of all time. Will I still feel the same after Endgame?

Endgame

I am unbelievably stoked that I got tickets to see the show on the day before it officially releases worldwide! A friend and I were on AMC the second the tickets were released trying to purchase them, and just when the servers were crashing and the apps were freezing, I thought we would not get to see it early.

Anyways on to the exciting part! (I am going to do what I normally do and generalize to minimize spoilers, but you will definitely not want to read the next section if you do not want anything spoiled…)

Endgame was epic! It was definitely a good choice to see it as soon as it came out, and it was well worth the money. The film wrapped up a lot of the open loops, which was satisfying to watch play out.

Some of the things I loved:

  • Captain American getting Thor’s Hammer! (This was probably the best part of the3511031-trailer_avengersendgame_20190314_site movie for me)
  • “Time Heist” – I am a big fan of time travel and heist plots. Put them together and it was fun to watch.
  • Everyone coming together and getting a small action clip
  • Having the women come together for their own action scene. Watching all of these movies with my girlfriend has really helped put in perceptive to me how important this is. I have tons of movie characters that I can identify with, but the same can not be said for most people. I am very happy that Marvel has done a great job of giving role models to everyone.
  • Iron Man and Captain America’s character arcs and plots finally coming to a avengers-endgame-costumes-featuredconclusion.
  • The soundtrack was great with AMC’s sound system. I am a giant nerd for movie scores, so the sound is always one of the biggest things that can make or break an experience for me.

Some things I did not enjoy:

  • Bucky not getting the shield. I’m not a big fan of Falcon.
  • Humor. I find the humor in all of the marvel movies good, and it works well, I just personally want the negative emotions to impact me deeper. Whenever there is a critical scene that wants to make you cry, a joke is cracked later to get us out of the slump. I get it… but the emotion would be more powerful if they let the despair linger a bit longer to really take hold.

 

It is bittersweet to see a story finish. All of us are really glad to live through the journey, but it is never easy to say goodbye. I am sure there will be many Marvel Movie Marathons (holy alliteration) in the future.

  2. I sobbed throughout.
    I was the only female in the audience I went to which was interesting as I’ve been invested in this series since the beginning but I’m glad the ladies got a scene 1. because of what happened on Vormir during Time Heist about broke me 2. I got to feel the same feels that guys do when they see a whole load of heroes that represent and resonate different aspects with them.
    And I literally jumped for joy with Mjolnir, been waiting for that since the ‘wobble’ in Age of Ultron.
    Laughed so hard with Thor, ‘what kind of beer?’
    Oh and my heart broke about 3000 times at the end.

  3. I enjoyed Fat Thor. Especially when he broke the Time Heist rules with his mother. But also knowing the surviving Asgardians found a home, Valkyrie getting handed the reigns and – of course – Cap and the hammer!
    But the whole Tony/Peter storyline gave me the feels, too. Tony’s remorse, their battlefield hug and Peter getting his goodbye in before Pepper. Very good emotional moments.

  7. Good review, but, and I know I am in the minority here, I didn’t think it was amazing – just good. There are definitely at least 5 or 6 better Marvel films just off the top of my head. For me, Captain America and Mjolnir was a big minus. Not because he used it, but because he laid out a can of whoop ass on Thanos with it whilst Thor had been kicked around like a rag doll seconds earlier with both Stormbreaker and Mjolnir. Which is silly considering Thor is potentially more powerful than Thanos without the stones anyway. It should a lack of consistency in power levels.

  9. I love all of the Marvel films, I’ve never read comics or even been interested them but I’m addicted to the films. I also love the Lego Xbox games too.

    I think I wanted more of both in this film – I think they needed to delve into the loss everyone felt and Thor’s PTSD and alcoholism in a serious and heartbreaking way (instead of as a joke) but I also think a few more chuckles would not have been amiss.

    On the one hand, I like the shot of the line up of all the bad ass women superheroes… and on the other hand I would have preferred simply having a more active role from Captain Marvel throughout the film instead of using her sparingly as a deus ex machina.

    I agree with some of the other commenters that I thought it was good, but not great. I enjoyed reading about your experience – thank you!

  12. I’m with you – 11 years and 22 movies, it was such a big part of the decade. I don’t think they could have brought it to a conclusion much better. I might be a little broken now, though!

  14. I loved this movie! It was sad, I agree about the humor, because, I was really sad about a part (not giving anything away) but then they cracked a joke, which took away the purpose of the sad scene.

  15. I think I’m depressed now that I first saw Ironman over a decade ago…sigh. I’m waiting to see this movie on streaming at home (don’t judge me!!).

  17. i love the avengers …im like their number fan . the movie broke my heart …i wish loki could come back . and my personal favourite tony stark , iron man , robert downey jr ….why him , why ?
    but cpatain america was amazing

  23. I agree with you Chaz, the part where Bucky doesn’t get the shield is annoying too!
    This movie has got me hooked to the story, so bad! 🙂
    The part where Iron Man dies is the most emotional scene, but when Black Widow dies it wasn’t that emotional. I guess we’re gonna miss a few heroes in the future of Marvel.
    Your review of this movie was great, as these are the feelings most people would have felt. 🙂

  25. Okay so, um, I freakin cried like CRAZY! Everyone around me was staring at me, but I don’t regret it. A week later, I’m still SHOOK. Like, how can this be the end?! Marvel’s been such a big part of my life for so long, and still is, and WOW. Great post!

  26. I 100% agree about Bucky not get getting the shield…nothing against Sam, but I was like what the heck. I also absolutely hated what they did to Thor, it was funny for like 5 minutes and then I was so done with it. That being said, I agree with you, it was SO nice to see Cap wield Mjolnir! We were all waiting for that one 😀 Thanks for the great post!

  28. I used so many tissues! But I agree, I thought they had lovely completions to the original character arcs. I liked the whole concept of Fat Thor, and am so glad there weren’t any spoilers about that before the movie came out. I hope we will see more of the As-Guardians of the Galaxy!

  33. Cool Review. I liked End Game and I cheered out loud with Cap and the hammer, and “On your left” was chilling. I didn’t like Fat Thor, this felt very poor taste. And black widow was cheated in my opinion. Not my favorite Marvel Film, that goes to Winter S. Stil a good one.

  35. Great review, and interesting to know how personal this franchise has become for you. I also liked how “Infinity War” ended with Thanos winning, and I think “Endgame” makes “Infinity War” better in retrospect, now that we have the complete story.

    One thing I don’t agree with – I thought it made more sense for Falcon to get the Shield than Bucky. Bucky is a former terrorist; imagine if this were real life, and a former terrorist that committed countless assassinations (some against prominent Americans) was passed on the mantle of Captain America. Over a veteran, no less. It would be grossly inappropriate. So even if Bucky is more of a fan favorite, I think Falcon makes more sense realistically and will do a fine job.

    I didn’t get into the Marvel movies at the beginning. But my now 15-year-old daughter has been a big fan since about 2014. I got drawn into the Infinity stone story. I like good to conquer evil, so seeing Thanos win was hard. Yet, you are right that sometimes a villain needs to win occasionally. That allows the triumph over evil to be even more significant later.

    My family saw the End Game the second weekend it was in theatres (I don’t like crowds). What an emotional roller coast! I felt drained at the end.

    Keep writing. You’ll just get better and less boring :).
